ATLANTIC CITY RUNS PAST QUEBEC 9-6, EARNS SERIES SPLIT
May 25 Recap
Quebec City – The Atlantic City Surf used a 3-for-4 afternoon from 3B Billy Hogan and a solid start from Ben Thurmond to upend the Quebec Capitales, 9-6, in a Can-Am League game on Sunday at Stade de Quebec. The victory was the second in a row for Atlantic City over the Capitales, and sealed a split of the four-game series. The Surf (2-2) jumped ahead early, getting three first-inning runs on RBI singles by Hogan and DH Clyde Williams, and an RBI groundout by 1B Joe Burke. Atlantic City then tacked on two more in the third, as Hogan singled in another run home, and RF Josh Burriss scampered home on a fielding error after stealing third. The lead grew to 9-0 for the Surf after a four-run sixth. Atlantic City led off the inning with five consecutive singles, by Hogan, C William Plaza, 2B David Keesee, CF Lucas Taylor and SS Anthony Granato. The first four would all eventually come around to score. It was more than enough support for Thurmond (1-0), who gave up two runs on six hits in six innings of work for the victory. After his departure, Derek Barrows pitched in his first game of the season, while Aaron Easton and Rory Shortell also made appearances out of the bullpen. Atlantic City stole six bases on the afternoon: three by Burris, two by LF Billy Kovatch and one by Williams. The Capitales (2-2) mounted a comeback in the later innings, but it was not enough to overcome the deficit. C Greg Stevens hit a two-run home run in the sixth, the first of the season for either team, to make it a 9-2 game. Quebec added three more in the eighth, including a two-run single by 3B Patrick Deschenes, and a single tally in the ninth, to make the final 9-6. Quebec starter Eric Nadon (0-1) was saddled with the loss in his first professional start, allowing four earned runs and six hits in four innings pitched. The Surf return to Atlantic City to start a seven-game homestand. The home opener takes place Monday night at 6:35 p.m. when the Surf take on the Ottawa Rapidz. Jim Wladyka will make his first start of the season for Atlantic City, while Fraser Robinson takes the mound for the Can-Am League’s newest member.
