SURF UNABLE TO STEM CAPITALES’ LATE-INNING DELUGE IN 8-3 DEFEAT
May 30 Recap
Atlantic City, N.J. – Led by a balanced attack that saw hits by all nine regulars in the batting order, the Quebec Capitales scored seven runs in the final four innings to run past the Atlantic City Surf, 8-3, in a Can-Am League game on Friday evening at Bernie Robbins Stadium. The Surf drew first blood with RF Josh Burrus’ double in the first inning, bringing home 1B Joe Burke. Quebec responded with a run in the third on C Patrick D’Aoust’s RBI double. The Capitales then exploded with tallies in each of the final four frames. Quebec started with two in the sixth, on SS Jean-Michel Rochon-Salvas’ single, driving in DH Patrick Scalabrini, and RF Mike Goss’ RBI groundout. Atlantic City tied the game back up at three with 2B David Keesee’s two-run double in the bottom half of the inning, but the Capitales then scored five unanswered runs to put the game out of reach. In the eighth, D’Aoust drove in two more with a single and later ran home on a wild pitch; the three runs were sandwiched between single scores in the seventh and ninth. Five different players had two hits on the evening for Quebec, while the Surf’s seven hits were spread among seven different players. Both starters received no-decisions on the evening. Atlantic City’s Ben Thurmond went five and one-third innings, allowing three runs on eight hits. Erick Nadon of Quebec gave up a run on three hits in five innings of work. Walker Whitley (0-1) was tagged with the loss, giving up a run in one and two-thirds innings for Atlantic City, while James Mondesir (1-0) earned the victory in relief in his first appearance of the season for the Capitales. The Surf (5-4), who also dropped the first two of their series May 22-25 in Quebec before rebounding to win the next two, face the Capitales (6-3) Saturday night at Bernie Robbins. Atlantic City’s Jim Wladyka will oppose Quebec’s T.J. Stanton, starting at 7:05 p.m.
