RODAWAY BRILLIANT AS SURF EDGE BROCKTON 2-1
May 13 Recap
Brockton, Mass. – Starter Brian Rodaway (above) (3-1) took a perfect game into the sixth inning, and DH Clyde Williams drove in the winning run in the top of the ninth, as the Surf (12-9) edged Brockton (10-11) 2-1 in a Can-Am League game Friday night at Campanelli Stadium. It was the first game of a three game set against the Rox, and the first of a six game road trip for the Surf. The game was the epitome of a pitcher’s duel all night long. Rodaway, the righty, was brilliant in his seven innings of work. A pair of hits in the sixth was all the Rox got off the Surf ace, who came into the game with a record of 3-1 and a 0.69 ERA. Rodaway also struck out three batters and walked none. Rox starter Wayne Lundgren was equally as masterful, tossing eight innings, and surrendering one run on three hits while striking out a season high eight. Ironically, neither starter factored in the decision. The Surf scored the first run of the game in the top of the seventh. RF Josh Burrus doubled down the left field line, and came in on a single by the 1B Eddie Kim. The Rox tied the game in the bottom of the eighth. Reliever Kevin George came on in relief of Rodaway, and surrendered a home run off the bat of 3B Phillip Cuadrado on the first pitch. The Surf scored the go-ahead and winning run in the top of the ninth when C Joe Burke singled to left, and came in on the Williams double to right center. George earned his first win in a Surf uniform, working his record to 1-0. Surf pitchers did not walk a batter all night. The two teams will play the middle game of the series tomorrow night at 7:05 PM. Righty JC Huguet (2-1) looks to rebound off a rough start against Brockton last Sunday. In the Surf’s 14-11 loss, Huguet lasted just two innings, surrendering seven runs, two of which were earned. He will be opposed by Rox starter Mike McTamney (0-3). ********** Atlantic City 000 000 101 – 2 5 0 Brockton 000 000 010 – 1 3 0 W: George (1-0) L: Baker (1-2) S: Duclos (2) Time: 2:11 Attendance: 5,595
