COX, EASTON SOLID, BUT A.C. OFFENSE STIFLED
June 20 Recap

Atlantic City, N.J. – Worcester’s Eddie Pena and Ryan Lobban combined on a four-hitter as the Tornadoes shut out the Atlantic City Surf, 4-0, in a Can-Am League game on Friday evening at Bernie Robbins Stadium.

Pena (3-1) threw eight innings of scoreless baseball, striking out two and walking just one, while Lobban pitched a perfect ninth inning for his first save of the season.

The Tornadoes’ stellar pitching overshadowed a serviceable performance from Surf hurlers. Starter Adam Cox (2-2) allowed two runs in six and one-third innings pitched, fanning six, while Aaron Easton held Worcester hitless through the final two and two-thirds, giving up one unearned run.

Worcester scored its first run in the fourth on LF Francisco Caraballo’s RBI single, and added another in the fifth on an RBI double by RF Scott Grimes, the league’s leading hitter coming into the game. The Tornadoes plated an insurance run in the eighth when C Alex Trezza scored on a throwing error by Surf 1B Eddie Kim.

CF B.J. Weed was Worcester’s only player with more than one hit, going 2-for-5 on the evening. For Atlantic City, CF Lucas Taylor (above) was 2-for-3 with a double; SS Anthony Granato’s double and DH Clyde Williams’ single were the only other base hits for the Surf.

With the first half of the season past its midway point, the Tornadoes (17-9) remained a game back of first-place Quebec, which demolished Sussex 18-3 this evening, while the Surf (14-13) fell to four and one-half games back of the Capitales.

A crowd of 4,639 was on hand, the second-largest for a Surf home game this season. The two teams battle again on Saturday night, with Shaun McNamara (1-2) on the hill for the Tornadoes, and Rory Shortell (0-0) throwing for Atlantic City.
