ZAYAS’ HOMER NOT ENOUGH AS PRIDE DOUBLE UP SURF
June 25 Recap

Atlantic City, N.J. – Atlantic City third baseman Gil Zayas (pictured) slugged his first professional home run, but the Surf could muster only one other hit, falling to the Nashua Pride, 4-2, in a Can-Am League affair at Bernie Robbins Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Atlantic City scored a run in the first inning without the benefit of a hit, after leadoff man CF Lucas Taylor walked, moved to second on a wild pitch, and came home on two consecutive groundouts, with LF Joe Burke earning the RBI. Nashua tied the game up in the third on CF Vinny Pennell’s sacrifice fly.

Both teams tallied a run in the fifth; the Pride went ahead 2-1 on Pennell’s RBI single, before Zayas’ solo blast to left in the bottom half of the inning tied the game back up. Zayas, a native of Cuba, was signed by the Surf on Sunday and was appearing in his fourth professional game, after spending the spring playing for St. John's University.

The sixth inning saw Nashua score two runs, on C Luis Rodriguez’ RBI groundout and 3B Jack Joffrion’s sacrifice fly, to take the lead for good. The Surf threatened in the ninth, when SS Anthony Granato led off the inning with his 14th double of the season, but Pride closer Andy Weimer shut the door for his ninth save of the season, keeping him tied for the league lead. Granato’s two-bagger put him in a tie for the Can-Am lead as well.

Pennell and Nashua 1B Bryan Duplissie were the only two players on either team with more than one hit, both going 2-for-4.

Luke Stevens (4-2) picked up the victory for Nashua (15-16), limiting the Surf to two runs on one hit in seven innings of work, striking out three. Aaron Easton (1-2) received the loss in his first start of the season, allowing three earned runs in five and one-third innings.

The Surf missed a chance to gain ground on front-running Worcester and Quebec, both of which lost on the evening; Atlantic City (16-16) remains three and one-half games back of the Tornadoes and Capitales.

The two teams play the final contest of the four-game set Thursday night, with Atlantic City’s Brian Rodaway (3-2) on the hill against the Pride’s Nicholas Suero (2-2).
