COX FLIRTS WITH NO-HITTER AS SURF SWEEP PRIDE
July 2 Recap
(Nashua) - Surf starter Adam Cox (above) took a no-hitter into the eighth inning, and the Surf held on for a 3-2 victory, sweeping the Nashua Pride at Historic Holman Stadium. Cox (4-2) seems to like pitching against the Nashua. Last Tuesday in Bernie Robbins Stadium, he tied a Can-Am League record with 14 strikeouts in a 5-4 Surf victory over the Pride. Tonight, he was equally as dominant. The tall lefty went seven innings, allowed one run on just one hit, and struck out twelve in the process. He now leads the league with 60 strikeouts. The Surf offense gave Cox all the run support he would need in the third inning. CF Lucas Taylor singled with one out, and moved to second on an error. SS Anthony Granato then walked, and both Taylor and Granato would advance after DH Joe Burke's pop up to third. With two outs, RF Josh Burrus singled to right, scoring Taylor. Then with Granato on third and Burrus on first, the Surf called a double steal, and Granato stole home for run number two. Then 1B Eddie Kim singled, scoring Burrus for the third run of the inning. The Pride tried to stage a rally in the eighth off of Cox and relievers Kyle George and Walker Whitely. Cox was six outs away from a no-hitter and the shutout entering the inning. But when 3B Jack Joffrion led off with the Pride's first hit of the ballgame, Cox was pulled for George. Nashua scored two runs in the inning, when 2B Ismael Castro grounded into a fielder's choice and an error on the play plated two runs. Whitley shut the door in the ninth, clinching the series sweep. On the season now, the Surf are 5-1 against Nashua. The story of the game was Cox, who is now 2-0 with a 2.40 ERA and 16 strikeouts against the Pride this season. The Surf finally return to Bernie Robbins stadium after a six game road trip in which they went 3-3. They host the New Jersey Jackals for four games over the holiday weekend. Game one is tomorrow night, at 7:05 PM.
